Jellybeans

Two friends share a curiosity about what comes after life.

Jellybeans is a delightfully simple story about two friends, a cat and a rabbit, that meet to share jellybeans and end up discussing the existence of heaven. (While the word “heaven” is used, there isn’t a religious tone to the book.) Their analysis of what might happen after death is thought-provoking, yet light—a gentle introduction to the deeper questions of life. The complex topic is balanced with minimalistic illustrations and straightforward dialogue. They consider the possibilities: will they bump into each other? Will they even recognize each other? If not, they agree to just become friends again. They also decide that it will be necessary to bring jellybeans and hot chocolate to share in heaven. I received the book as a gift, and cherish the message of the story and the questions it inspires, even as an adult.
