A Whistle For Willie
The little-known sequel to the much beloved Snowy Day.
The Snowy Day is one of those children’s books that inspires almost universal love. Growing up in warm, snowless California, the book was doubly magical with it’s slow and perfect evocation of a snow-filled city. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I learned of of the sequel, A Whistle for Willie that follows protagonist, Peter, around as he tries to learn to whistle to call his dog. Told with the same slow, poetic rhythm and evocative images, it’s criminal that the book has been so overlooked. It, too, is a classic.
