The Nutshell Library

Four small books written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak.

The Nutshell Library is a collection of four books designed for small hands. The titles include Alligators All Around (An Alphabet), Chicken Soup with Rice (A Book of Months), One Was Johnny (A Counting Book) and Pierre (A Cautionary Tale). This collection played such a large part in the life of our young children it’s almost hard to write about them. Each night we would rhyme our way through Chicken Soup with Rice, chase out unwanted guests in One was Johnny, and chuckle at Pierre’s misfortune. If you are looking for a first counting book, a first book of months, and a first alphabet book, look no further. Each book has a distinct rhythm designed to delight children.
