The President of the Jungle

Fullheader V1

Learn about democracy in this “wild” election!

As we settle in for what might be a long and contentious post-election week, many of us are trying to make sense of lots of incoming information, facts, and numbers. Our children feel our stress and wonder what’s going on. If you are looking for a book to help explain voting and elections, we suggest you check out The President of the Jungle, which helps to describe democracy in a way that even young children can understand.

Lions are known to be the kings of the jungle, but what happens when a particular lion decides to reroute the jungle’s river to make a private pool for himself? In The President of the Jungle, animals grow outraged with the existing monarchy and decide to hold an election to determine a new leader. As the citizens of the jungle set up rules for their newfound democracy, they learn about the candidates through debates, and eventually elect a president that represents the voice of the “people”.

The President of the Jungle is a unique story that helps readers understand the ins and outs of a truly “wild” election and can hopefully help inspire a generation of active voters. You can find The President of the Jungle at your local library here. If you have any other resources that have helped you tackle these conversations with your kids, we’d love to hear about them!
