This Is Not My Hat
Two fish, one hat.
This Is Not My Hat was the 2013 Caldecott Medal winner and one of Amazon’s Best Children’s Books of 2012. The book is narrated by a mischievous little fish that has swiped a hat from a much larger fish. The storytelling is sophisticated, with much of the action taking place ‘off screen’ between pages and a first-person narration told in parallel to action happening outside the narrator’s view; the drawings are spare and funny (small eye movements speak volumes); and the book has a nice, easy rhythm. This is a perfect story for young kids who are starting to anticipate action in storybooks and are fill in details on their own. The book evokes deep chuckles in my kindergartner even after repeated readings.
