Who Needs Donuts?

A ’70s masterpiece of ridiculousness is back in print.

Who Needs Donuts? is an absurdist romp. It follows Sam, a kid who wants ”not just a few donuts, but hundreds and thousands and millions of donuts,” from suburb to city on his quest. Early editions are highly sought after by collectors for their Wanda Gag/Robert Crumb-inspired density, their cheery nonsense, and their unencumbered joy. Watching my kids chuckle their way through the book and linger over the rich illustrations brought back the sense memory of my own readings of the book, tucked away deep in the stacks of my local East Texas library. The cover plate states, “Warning: This book is addictive.” I agree.
