Romare Bearden: A Black Odyssey is a national traveling exhibition of the Smithsonian Institution. The exhibition-affiliated Remixes app provides children with an opportunity to learn a little bit more about this American artist and the inspiration for his collages—The Odyssey by Homer. It also gives children a digital canvas to remix elements from Bearden’s collages with their own cutout shapes to create new masterpieces that can be posted to a public gallery and shared with others. Children can also incorporate sounds and words to their digital collages, adding their own stories to their artwork.
The color and whimsy of Bearden’s landscape backdrops and cutout figures make me want to go grab some construction paper, scissors, and glue, and start snipping away! Using the idea of “odyssey,” this app is a great spark to create both digital and paper collages.
